On the expressway, cars whizzed past me, so I picked up speed traveling about 10 or 15 miles above the speed limit. Still, many passed me, but I was unwilling to speed any faster than what I was already going. I found myself quickly approaching the back end of a car probably traveling under the speed limit. I changed lanes to pass.Then I heard the siren.
"Officer," I said, "so many others passed me by so I sped up to keep up with traffic. Why didn't you go after them? ,"
As he diligently completed my ticket, he said, "You are the one I caught. When I give a ticket, it reminds others to slow down. That's the goal. ,"
Simple as that.
Life had been good for the man and woman until they ate the forbidden fruit. God had no complaints and neither did the man and woman. Now that they had eaten the fruit and knew the existence of evil, they hid from God and showed lack of personal responsibility by passing blame. Like the police officer, God wanted to stop that bad behavior.
So God chose to punish the serpent, condemning it to a life in the dust where people could crush it. He didn't change the man or woman because they were created in his image. God doesn't go back on his Word.
Yet, just as my ticket reminded others not to speed, the serpent's punishment reminds us that God disapproves deceit and that he's still capable of anything.
