Friday Blessings - Trust God and Fear not! What can mere mortals do? 💛

Today's Bible Reading Portion: Matthew 10:24-42

Read Matthew 10 Here --> ESVKJV

"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." - Matthew 10:28

Jesus tells here not to fear those who can hurt us physically and are unable to kill the soul.

The soul is the actual life of the person. The soul continues to live apart from the body. The soul is separated from the physical world. The soul refers to a person’s core identity, their true life. The body and its earthly goods are important, but they are not the most important in eternal prespective.

Earthly attacks are bound to happen for strong, courageous believers. Jesus don't want us to be afraid of the earthly hurts and attacks. Here in Matthew, Jesus says that instead of letting the unhealthy but real fear of man control us and direct our choices, we are to replace it with a proper fear of God who is able to destroy both the body and soul. It is clear that Jesus is teaching His disciples to have a fear of God over fear of man.

Jesus is warning His disciples that it is more dreadful to miss the future glory of co-reigning with God in the New Earth than it is to die here on this earth. Ultimately, God will reward them for their faithfulness.

“Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.” - 1 Peter 4:29

David also testifies to this same principle of fearing God over man when he wrote:

“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” - Psalm 53:6-4

God wants us to lean onto Him completely. Our Logic does not apply for His eternal plans. He wants us to trust and rely on Him at all times. Don't fear people. The only thing they can take from us is our physical life. Instead, God will judge and he can take our eternal life from us. Let us be more mindful of  pleasing and trusting the Lord and doing His will.

PRAYER:

Dear God,

Thank you for your assurance of who you are in my life. When I am afraid I trust you. What can mere mortals do to me? You are my refuge and my confidence. In you I rest and abide. In Jesus name, Amen.

REFLECT:  Who will you obey? Who will you fear? One day when you face the judgment who will be on that throne?
