Who wrote this line “Be still, and know that I am God”?
ANSWER: Sons of Korah (Psalm 46:10)

God Is Our Fortress - PSALM 46:1-11 ESV

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

1) Be still...

“Be still, and know that I am God."
     - Psalm 46:10a

The Hebrew definition of "Be still" (raphah) means: ‘cease striving’ and ‘to let go and surrender’.

(Psalm 46:10 Be still (raphah) = let go, abandon = cease striving ≠ do nothing). Mark 4:39 - "And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."When Jesus calms the storm ‘Be still’

(Mark 4:39) literally means ‘Hush’ or ‘Shh’.

 ‘There must be time for Him, just to love Him and have Him love us, no other agendas, no list of prayer requests……’(Carol Arnott)

Here God is reminding you, ‘Stop! You don’t need to do this! I am GOD.’

Who is God?

He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings!He is Omniscient – that is all knowing.He is Omnipresent – present in all of the universe. He is Omnipotent – that is all powerful He is Holy, Faithful, Infinite without measure, the same yesterday, today and forever and He is Sovereign.
When Jesus is in your boat ⛵ nothing is going to happen to you without His knowledge.

But, make sure He is in your boat!

When do I need to remember this? - Be still, and know, that I am God.

  • In the difficult times.

When disciples said to Jesus, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

  • In the good times.

James 1:17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

2) Be still, and know…
1 Corinthians 2:16 ESV“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

This verse reminds us that in Christ we are able to know God personally because we have received the ‘mind of Christ’.

3) Be still, and know, that I AM GOD...

"You can know about God and still not know God"

Information ≠ Transformation

Galatians 4:19 says, "my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!

Information(Word of God) + Formation (Work of the Spirit) = Transformation (Christ Likeness).

Eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.

John 17:3 - "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."

Application : Ask Yourself

Be still – What changes can you make in your daily life to spend more time ‘being still’ in God’s presence? Know - Do you really know God? Are you in relationship with Him? I am God - Do you need fresh faith to trust Him for today, tomorrow and the future?
Do you really know God or do you only know about God ?
